Dental implants are the best tooth replacement option available. The thing that makes them unique is that they replace the roots of the missing teeth – not just the chewing surfaces. This allows for all sorts of extra benefits, including greater stability, longevity, and comfort. To achieve this, getting dental implants requires a surgical procedure. It’s important that you take steps to allow the area to heal quickly and efficiently. Here are some things you should avoid.

Smoking

Dental implants rely on a process called “osseointegration.” This is the process in which the jawbone and implant fuse together. Ultimately, it makes the implant a part of your body. If you are smoking or using other tobacco products, they can slow down the healing process, increasing your risk of developing an infection and dental implant failure. It is best to refrain from smoking for a week before and several months after your procedure.

Vigorous Rinsing

Swishing your mouth with salt water is a great way to clean the area and promote healing, but you should be careful not to do so too vigorously. This can disturb the surgical site and result in bleeding. When you clean your teeth, you can gently swish water, salt water, or mouthwash. Remember not to “spit.” Instead, allow the liquid to flow out of your mouth into the sink.

Intense Exercise

Getting plenty of exercise is important to maintain a healthy lifestyle. However, intense physical activity increases blood flow and can cause bleeding at the surgical site. If you are partaking in strenuous exercise, give yourself a little break after your surgery. If your job is physically demanding, take a few days off to rest.

Hard & Hot Foods

For several days after your surgery, stick to as soft-food diet. You should avoid spicy and hot foods as well. Try to chew on the opposite side of your mouth as your dental implants. This way, you are less likely to disturb the healing process.

Using Straws

When you use a straw to drink, you create a suction in your mouth and can dislodge the blood clot that has formed over the implant site. This can result in dry socket. This painful condition requires intervention from a dental professional.

To help your recovery go as smoothly as possible, be careful to avoid the things listed above. You will have a beautiful, complete smile in just a matter of time!
